Come early as there is always a line. Watch for our traffic directors when you pull into the lot to help you find a safe parking spot. Heck, make it a Ladies' Day Out; carpool and then go have lunch afterwards and gloat about the fabulous bargains you scored!

We open at 10am. You'll start in the Stuffing Room, which is located in our Dress Shop (two doors down in the same building). We will have the sale items neatly organized and ready for you. A Stuffing Assistant will hand you a bag when you walk in the door. Stuff that baby FULL of all the good stuff you find. Ask for another bag if you need it; there's no limit to the number of bags you can stuff!

Our Stuffing Assistants are experts at fitting huge amounts of stuff in your bag, so ask for help to fit that extra piece you just HAVE to have. In fact, we do training to learn how to stuff the bags fuller. We have to be able to tie the handles of the bags but we WANT these items to find new homes so we will help you fit more in!

When you're done stuffing, hand your bag to a Stuffing Assistant. She will stash it for you so you can finish shopping hands-free, and hand you a voucher. Hold tight to that voucher because it serves TWO purposes in helping you;

First, it allows you to retrieve your stuffed bag(s) and...

What's the deal with the "no-bag" rule? (click to read the extended version)

It's true. This is a very abbreviated list of the strange and scary things that have surprised us in the first eighteen months of Born Again's existence, hidden in bags of "just washed" and "clean" clothes and toys. (It's amazing what can get into bags which are stored for even a short time) I realize that this is shocking (imagine OUR surprise!!), and I'm sure you can understand why we simply cannot expose our staff or our customers to such dangers.

We want to offer the absolute best service to every one of our customers and suppliers on every visit. In fact, part of our employee manual goes into detail about how to make a person feel great during their visit to Born Again. It's our goal and it's what we LOVE to do!

Our "no-bag" rule has had the unfortunate consequence of upsetting people, even to the point of...well, never mind. The point of this blog entry is to share some ideas. We have the no-bag information on our website, blog, Facebook, in-store brochures, phone scripts and, of course, we share it with every supplier who visits us. Still, we need to further our reach! We need to get this information into the hands of those planning to bring us stuff for the first time, so we can help them have a great first experience AND bring more great products to you!

We've been brainstorming and, so far, have come up with a whooping ONE grand idea! The best part of this idea, though, is that our customers (that's YOU) are already great at this! We know you already tell your friends about us, sharing your bargain finds and how much extra money you made by bringing your underloved items to us. Could you also tell your friends and family planning to bring us items for the first time about our no-bag safety rule, to save them the frustration of a wasted trip?

A simple explanation like this would do the trick:

"It's easy! As long as your items are in a hard-sided container they'll look at 'em right then!"

-or-

"Take your stuff to Born Again and turn it into cash! Just make sure your stuff is in anything but a bag they'll look through them while you wait!"

It's a win-win! Your friends and family will thank you for helping them make money on their underloved stuff, and we'll have even more great stuff for you!

Dress For Your Figure - the Pants Edition

There are so many choices out there! How's a girl to know what style will work for her, downplaying imperfections and accentuating the best features? Here's the skinny (excuse the pun):

For a straight figure of any size...

Lucky you! You can pull off just about any waist rise and style of leg. Avoid contoured waists. Look for pants that have a belt or pockets that will appear to add curviness.

If your bum needs filling out, try jeans or pants with pockets that have lots going on.

If you have a tummy...

Look for a wide waistband with at least a mid-rise. Straight-cut pants and jeans will lessen any contrast between a thicker middle and a slimmer bottom half. Avoid low-rise, pleats, belts and wide-leg pants.

"Made in America"

It pleases me to hear so many people talking about only buying items that are proudly "Made in America." It's a good thing to support our national economy, American workers, and "Joe Six-Pack" from "Main Street, America."

Now there's the new push to "Shop Local" which is an even more directed campaign to not only keep American dollars in the United States but to keep your dollars in your own community.

What does "Made in America" really mean these days? What qualifies a product to wear that banner? Some items are "made" by American companies but assembled in a foreign manufacturing plant. Others are made partially from foreign parts but assembled in an American plant. Still others may be made wholly from American-made parts and processed into a final product in a U.S. plant but still be made by a foreign-owned company.

The Federal Trade Commission has laws that govern what can be officially (or implied to be) "Made in America" but one wonders how many slide by under the radar or squeak through unsubstantiated claims.

*For a more detailed (i.e. verbose and tedious) explanation you can read the question-answer-example format put forth on the Bureau of Consumer Protection's website.

I submit to you that one of the few transactions you can participate in that satisfies all these qualifiers is shopping resale and consignment. Though the original manufacturing of an item may be foreign, that original transaction is long over. Now the item is transformed! It is 100% American-owned, has been used and cared for by that citizen, and now has been put up for sale in an American-owned small business (probably on Main Street).

Who benefits? The consignor/owner of the item (your neighbor), the American small-business owner (your neighbor), employees of the business (yep, you guessed it; your neighbors), local economy, national economy, and YOU, the new owner of this freshly transformed new-to-you-and-now-fully-Americanized item. Is there anything more American than that?

Here's Your Tax Season "Checklist"

Tax season is here. You've got until April 18, 2011, to file your taxes, so it is a good time to think about some moves to help improve your situation. With these thoughts in mind, here are some "tax-smart" moves to consider:

Boost your 401(k) contributions.

By making pre-tax contributions to your 401(k), you can lower your adjusted gross income. And if your employer offers a "Roth" 401(k), you may want to take advantage of it. Your Roth 401(k) contributions are made with after-tax dollars, so you won't lower your adjusted gross income, but your account has the opportunity to grow tax-free, and any withdrawals you make during retirement won't be subject to income tax, provided you're at least 59-1/2 and you've held the account for at least five years.

"Max out" on your IRA.

If you have a traditional IRA, your contributions may be tax deductible, and your earnings are always tax deferred, which means your money has the opportunity to grow faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Taxes are due upon withdrawal and withdrawals prior to age 59-1/2 may be subject to a 10 percent IRA penalty. If you have a Roth IRA, the rules are similar to those governing a Roth 401(k): Your contributions aren't deductible, but your money has the opportunity to grow tax free, provided you've had your account at least five years and don't start taking withdrawals until you're 59-1/2. (You'll have to meet certain income guidelines to qualify for a Roth IRA.) You've got until the tax-filing deadline to contribute to your IRA for the 2010 tax year, for which the maximum contribution amount is $5,000, or $6,000 if you're 50 or older. And once you've "maxed out" on your IRA for 2010, you can start contributing for the 2011 tax year.

Increase your 529 contributions.

By putting money into a 529 plan, you can help your children, or grandchildren, save for college. Earnings on a 529 plan have the opporunity to grow free of federal income tax, and withdrawals, if used for qualified higher education expenses, are also federally tax-free. Contributions may be eligible for a state income tax deduction or credit in certain states for residents who participate. Plus, by using the 529 plan to provide financial resources for your child, grandchild or other beneficiary, all or a portion of the gift may be removed from your taxable estate.

Be charitable.

By contributing to a qualified charity, you can claim a deduction on your taxes, assuming, of course, that you itemize. And if you donate stocks or other assets, you can avoid paying capital gaines taxes, because it will be the charity, not you, that eventually sells the asset.

Take advantage of favorable rates on capital gains and dividiends.

Recent tax legislation included a two-year extension on the maximum 15 percent tax rate on long-term capital gains and qualified dividends. As a result, you still have incentives to be a "buy-and-hold" investor and to seek out quality companies that can potentially pay dividends.

Although tax season may end in April, you can make tax-smart moves throughout the year. So keep your eyes open for these opportunities, and take full advantage of them.

A recent thread on our Facebook page addressed this question and quite a few people chimed in with their experiences and opinions. There seems to be quite a range!

Sittercity.com has lots of information (including a matching service), both for parents seeking sitters and sitters seeking babysitting jobs. The best part, though, is the rate calculator! I was shocked to find that the "going rate" in my area for two kids, a sitter with 1-2 years experience, who is 18-21 years old (youngest option) is $9/hour! That's $1.75 higher than minimum wage...but then again, I'm trusting this person with the most precious people in my life.

Pregnancy Perks

There's been much talk recently about special privileges for pregnant women. What is acceptable? What should be mandatory? What borders on the ridiculous? For example, an NY legislator has proposed Special Parking Privileges for Pregnancy.

The above article proposes various other options for Pregnancy Perks such as a special grocery store express lane and ticketing those who do not give up a subway seat or taxi to a pregnant woman. Having been there myself quite a few times, I can think of a few things I'd like to add to this list:

Public bathroom pass to the front of the line
Nap pass (to be used at home or at work)
The right not to be touched (why does this somehow get suspended when you're pregnant and perfect strangers feel compelled to touch the belly?)
"Yes, I'm pregnant. No, do not give me unsolicited advice." bumper stickers for every pregnant woman

Honeysuckle!

If you're like me you thought as you read that, "Yay!...What's honeysuckle?" Pictures of honey-colored objects were running through my head. I took a crash course in Honeysuckle 101 with Google as my professor. The best article I found with examples of Honeysuckle shows it being used in everything from clothing to drapes, dishes to picture frames. I'm not sure if it's Murphy's Law kicking in, but it seems like those not-quite-right gifts are always purchased at a store that we don't have here! Hence, no way to return it. So now what?

Last night I was sitting at home with my boys. The tv was on and we were, all three us, bored out of our minds. The thought came to me that this was the perfect moment for "family time" that didn't involve electronic devices. We have a closet full of board games, a pool table, and several decks of cards. However, when I asked my boys what they wanted to play they claimed they were bored with our games. I toyed with the idea of running to Walmart and getting a new game...but the thought of dealing with holiday crowds (not to mention changing back out of my pjs) was not an attractive idea.

This morning I came across this ARTICLE about a fun game you can play for free with children who have at least a 4th grade reading level. All you need is a dictionary for "The Dictionary Game", some paper and pencils, and voila! A ready-made game you can play any time that is sure to bring some laughter.

No electronic devices. Creative thinking. Humorous results.

Holiday De-Stressing Tips for Real Life

The kids are out of school, the in-laws are in town, there are airport pickups to schedule, packages to run to the post office, and a three-course meal to make for 21.726 people (if you count your pregnant sister-in-law and your grandmother's miniature poodle that is practically an appendage). Even if you spread that out over the whole month of December it would be enough to make any sane woman crave a little down time in a padded room. Alas, there are only seven days until Christmas!

As your stress level builds what do you do to combat it? This Marie Claire article has some tips. Be forewarned: the first two are a little cheeky, but tarry on, my holiday-harried friends! There are good tidbits of advice to be had. Sure, we've heard it all before (take time for yourself, exercise, relax) but sometimes we need to hear it again in the heat of the de-stressing battle before it sinks in that it really is ok to get in your car and take a drive...alone...to nowhere in particular...just because.

Marie Claire offers 8 great time-tested tips (and 2 cheeky ones). I have one to offer, as well.

This time of year I'm not just trying to plan a family holiday but also putting together grand ideas about how I'm going to change my life in the coming year; be a better mom and wife, exercise more, pray more, put together projects for Born Again, be more organized and a better housekeeper. All these thoughts and plans become a cacophony of noise that leads to mental panic from which I cannot logically release myself.

My solution: I buy a planner. This solution actually works many times throughout the year...not just during the holidays! All my good intentions are on the brink of fruition when I'm standing in the checkout line with a planner in my hands. Oh boy, does that feel good! I've never caught sight of my reflection in that moment but I'd bet good money that my cheeks are glowing and I have a dreamy, satisfied smile on my face. It doesn't matter if it's a Franklin Covey $100 planner or one from the stationary section for $1.99. The blank pages, neatly segmented into symmetrical blocks, promise streamlined organization in my home, work, errands, and mind.

Do I use the planners I buy? Nah. I carry them around for a bit and then they get used as scrap paper (I buy way more of the $1.99 ones, for obvious reasons). It's the promise that matters, that quiets the panicky noise.

Hmmmmm...maybe you should stick to tips 8 and 10 (my personal favorites)...but find out what aisle the planners are on, just in case.

Michelle Obama Buys Second-hand!

Yes, it's true! The first lady wore a vintage dress purchased at a specialty vintage shop to the "Christmas in Washington" concert which will air on TNT tonight! (see picture and read full article HERE)

What does "vintage" mean exactly? Well, the bottom line is that someone else already wore it which means the dress was then offered up for resale/consignment. Which means resale/consignment is endorsed by the First Lady. Which means the ultimate in style, according to the White House, is now yours to be had right in your own back yard!

Does Born Again Resale & Consignment sell vintage $2500 dresses? No. But we've got what you need to fill your closet with the perfect new-to-you pieces that are much easier on the pocketbook than shopping at the mall.

Keeping Baby Healthy This Winter

Winter can be a great time of year with little ones; first snow experiences, snuggle time in front of the fireplace, creative indoor play time. However, when baby is sick it's not fun for anyone! So what's a mom to do?

BabyCenter has a great article that offers some tips for parents about how to lessen your baby's exposure to germs:

Wash your hands frequently
Wash baby's hands frequently
Wash older siblings' hands frequently
If your child is in daycare, inquire about their "sick-kid" policy to assess the potential for exposure there
Keep your baby up-to-date on vaccinations
Boost your baby's immune system naturally by breastfeeding (if possible) and, once baby is eating solids, offering a variety of healthy foods

But what do you do if baby is already sick?...

Try saline nose drops
Use a bulb syringe to help with nasal congestion
Make sure baby gets lots of rest
Use a humidifier
Urge baby to drink fluids
Make time for extra snuggling and TLC
Know when to take baby to the doctor

I would add only one additional thought to this...

It's hard on moms, too, when baby is sick. We moms want our kids to be happy and healthy and comfortable, and it pains our hearts when our little ones hurt. I remember those days when my babies wrestled with a cold or flu...they were tired and cranky, and pretty soon I was tired and cranky, too!

Remember that it's ok to take care of YOU during these difficult times and to ask for help from a spouse, other family member, or friend. Something as simple as a neighbor raking my yard while I took a nap with my son or my husband getting up 30 minutes early to do the dishes before he left for work made a world of difference during those trying times.

So take a nap. Take a bath. Restore you so you can be there for baby.

The High Price of Cotton

An interesting ARTICLE appeared in this month's MSN Money. Record increases in the cost of cotton have resulting in many retailers, such as Gap Inc and Levi Strauss & Co, having to raise prices in their stores by as much as 15%...and it's getting worse!

What does this mean for you? The benefit is two-fold...

First, avoid the price increases and save money by shopping resale and consignment. Because we aren't paying for the cotton-to-product manufacturing, Born Again Resale & Consignment's prices will remain stable.

Born Again owner Tara Bren can appreciate her store's success, but she's not one to rest on her laurels.

Bren has plans to open a seasonal dress shop adjacent to her current store location on Thain Road, filling a need she sees for the high school and college prom-going crowd. She'll put that plan into action by the end of the year.

Until then, Bren is busy with her latest idea, what she calls the "Just Say Eco" program. For every customer who chooses to carry out purchases by hand or brings in a reusable bag, Born Again donates a nickel to the Washington State University Environmental Club.

The program started Oct. 18 at the store, and already $6 has been raised for the club.

"That's not huge, but if we can do that every week is starts adding up," Bren said.

The money will go toward the club's education and outreach programs designed to promote sustainability and promote environmentally conscious activities and education at WSU.

The environmental club is just one of a handful of groups and charities Born Again supports. While the majority of the store's clothes and children's items are sold on consgnment, many items are donated. Bren will resell the donated items, and pass along the profits to charities. It's a classic "win, win" for her customers.

"Maybe [someone] doesn't have cash, but heck, if [their] kids outgrow their clothes [they] can use that," Bren said. "It's a nice way that anybody can participate and help out a charity."

Bren and her husband, Mike, moved to Lewiston in July of 2004 from the San Diego area in California. They have two teenage sons and a beloved service dog, Ellie, who has become the store's unofficial mascot. The store employs seven part-time employees.

"We've fallen in love with the town, the pace," Bren said.

Born Again Resale and Consignment is open six days a week at 538 Thain Road. Hours are: 10-6 Monday, Wednesday and friday: 10-7 Tuesday and Thursday; and 10-5 Saturday.

There's just something about Drew Barrymore. From the time I first saw E.T. I wanted to be just like her. We are the same age, afterall, and here she was starring in a blockbuster movie! As I've grown up, I've watched her grow up too. Here I am, now the owner of a resale and consignment store and it turns out Drew is a die-hard resale and consignment shopper!!!

Drew found this vintage (in this case vintage = "awesome") dress in a secondhand store and wore it to a red carpet event. Of course, she was wearing $700 shoes and some expensive professional artist did her makeup and hair, but nobody's perfect!

What's the deal with the "no-bag" rule?

You've worked hard cleaning out your child's toybox and dresser, or your own closet. You've sweated, you've stacked, you've shifted some items from the "keep pile" to the "consign pile" and back again. Now the work is done, your closet is organized, and you're ready for a quick trip to Born Again Resale & Consignment. The only question is...what do I put the clothes IN to take them to the store?

Born Again has very few rules for our sellers and consignors...in fact, we have only one! However, the "no-bag" rule has caused some confusion and we would like to clear things up. So...

What's the deal with the "no-bag" rule?!?!

There are two main reasons behind this policy. First, the safety of our staff is of the utmost importance. Without going into the yucky (and sometimes dangerous) details from past experiences, bags are tough to hold open and dark inside making it difficult for staff to see what exactly they are reaching toward. When items are presented in a hard-sided container (laundry basket, plastic tote box, cardboard box) and laid as flat as possible staff can pull up one item at a time for examination without worry that a sharp, or otherwise dangerous object, is lurking out of sight.

Second, the more of your items we can accept for consignment, the more money you can make! When items are laid neatly in a hard-sided container they tend to stay wrinkle-free and fresh which means faster processing of your items from the front counter to the sales floor. This faster processing means we are able to keep our resale and consignment acceptance appointment-free! Because everyone takes a minute or two to presort their items and lay them flat in a hard-sided container, we can accept walk-ins any time we're open.

We want to do the best possible job of displaying and selling your items for you. When you help us to help you by preparing your items this way, it's a win-win for all!

The "no-bag" deal continues to be a source of confusion and we are searching for ways to make this information more accessible. Currently we have it on our website, blog, phone script (for when new sellers/consignors call to ask questions), brochures available inside the store, and certainly, we share the information with every single seller and consignor that comes to see us. If you have an idea about how to better get the word out, we're all ears! (please comment below)

I hope that sellers and consignors will continue to be understanding. We strive to give 100% every time, with every person that walks into the store and to make it as easy as possible for people to bring their items in to us.

Of course, the majority of people are very careful and would never allow something dangerous to get mixed in with the items they are planning to bring to us. Still, it happens. In almost all of these situations, I believe the "find" was unintentional; the seller/consignor was just as surprised as we were....and that's just it. Though everyone believes their bagged items are perfectly fine, dangerous items do sometimes get mixed in through no fault of the person actually bringing the items in to us.

So, please, be kind to our employees. They are doing their job and they really are striving to give everyone the best possible service. For their own safety they cannot give out totes to allow sellers/consignors to pour their bagged items into. If there's something dangerous in the bag, it will now be in the tote, too.

The vast majority of our customers have been very understanding, and to those we say a resounding, "Thank you!" As always, our goal is to deliver excellent customer service every time and we thank you for the continued opportunity to serve you.

What's Stuff-A-Bag?

Twice yearly we do a big Stuff-A-Bag Sale Event. It's a fun, crazy day full of great deals.

This Saturday, Feb 6th will be our Winter Stuff-A-Bag Sale Event and will include all our winter clearance items. You can stuff a bag full of winter items for just $20!

You can mix and match from different departments to fill as many bags as you like (no limit). Choose from:

Teen/Junior wear
Misses wear
Maternity
Infant/Toddler wear
Big Kids/Tween wear

We will also be chock full of incoming new-to-you Spring/Summer items to peruse. Each bag-stuffing-shopper gets a $5 coupon for same day use on any regularly-priced Spring/Summer clothing, accessories and shoes or use it on books, toys and equipment.

We open at 10am and we'll be going strong all day long, until closing time at 5pm. Every shopper can also enter to win one of 5 gift certificates to be given away!

Some common questions about our Stuff-A-Bag Events:

Q: Should I get there early?

A: There's always a line waiting for us to open. We will be putting some non-sale items outside for display but we will not open early or allow shoppers inside before 10am.

Q: Will there be enough stuff for me to completely fill a bag?

A: The earlier you arrive, the better the selection. Since all departments' clearance items are included, you can supplement your selection of infant items with jeans and tops from the Misses or Juniors department for youself...or vice versa!

Q: I want to get the good sale stuff so I want to stuff a bag first and then shop the Spring/Summer selection. Will I have to carry around my heavy stuffed bag while I shop?

A: We are happy to hold your bag at the Stuffing Station until you have finished shopping and are ready to go.

Q: How many items can I fit in one of Born Again's bags?

A: We have experienced stuffers to help you fit the highest number of items possible into your bags. Past sales have taught us that approximately 25 infant items, or 18-20 toddler items, or 12 adult items will fit in our bags, depending on the thickness and bulk of the items you select. However, this is not a limit! We do have to be able to tie the handles of the bag shut but if we can get more in, we will! Our goal is to clear out every piece of winter merchandise in the store to make room for incoming Spring/Summer so we want to fit more, More, MORE into each bag!

The Cloth Diaper Whisperer

I am asked dozens of times per week about cloth diapering; is it hard? is it messy? is it inconvenient?

The answers to those questions are no, no, and ummmm....no! Cloth diapering does require more forethought and some different accessories but the trade-off is well worth the results; a happy baby, a happy bank balance, and a happy planet.

Part of the nervousness about diving into cloth diapering head-long seems to be the fear of the unknown. Most people "get" that cloth diapering saves you money but it is a big investment in the beginning and no one wants to get into it only to discover it's too hard, messy, or inconvenient. I love things to be organized; my desk, my kitchen, my closet, the store. For the most part, I even love the actual process of organizing...well, ok, I love the feeling of satisfaction I get when the job is completed. What I really don't love is the continuous build-up of tension as a room (read "the entire house") slowly accummulates stuff until I feel as if I can't find anything, do anything, or function in a way that has some semblance of normalcy.

There are thousands of books and products that claim to help you get organized in your home or workplace. The problem for most people, including me, isn't lack of knowledge. It's about making things simple. I can buy a dozen new-fangled thingamabobs to organize my closet but if I don't weed out the items that no longer fit, or that I don't like, or that were mistakes which were never worn my organizing will be all for naught. Same goes for my boys' rooms.

Shout Out to Mr. Clean

Aside from the fact that Mr. Clean is a handsome genie-type (kinda looks like my husband, actually) the man makes an awesome product. Magic Eraser. Ask any neat freak and they'll tell ya; Magic Eraser is the bomb!

Swings, highchairs, boosters, metal, plastic, toys, shoes...Magic Eraser makes them all gleam like new. Since we clean a LOT of things Born Again Resale & Consignment should probably buy stock in the makers of Magic Eraser because we go through several per week.

Cool Stuff Spotlight - Dapper Snappers

Born Again Resale & Consignment is run by a mompreneur (that's me) and, as such, we love to support other mompreneurs. This week's Cool Stuff Spotlight is a mom-made product, the Dapper Snapper!

This is how it works.... You're getting the kidlets dressed in the morning and discover that, lo and behold, your smallest darling has had a nighttime growth spurt and all his jeans and pants are too short. "Thank goodness for hand-me-downs," you think as you raid your preschooler's outgrown clothes from last year.

You slide them up and snap them, concentrating on the cuffs, delighted to see they are the correct length...until you let go of the clasp and the waist shimmies down to the poor child's thighs! Ugh...the length is good but the waist is too big.

Solution: the mompreneur-created Dapper Snapper. Simply slip the ends through the back belt loops on any pair of pants and snap to the correct size! We do have some guidelines in place to make sure we get in quality preloved items and that you get the most out of your items:

Items must be freshly laundered and free of stains, tears, and pilling
Clothing items must have been purchased new within the last two years
Clothing items must be laid flat in a hard-sided container, like a laundry basket or cardboard box (i.e. no bags), for the safety of our staff and the best return for you
Shoes, accessories, and small toys must also be a in hard-sided container
Equipment must be clean (fabric parts washed) and in good working order

We accept Juniors and Misses items on consignment. Again, no appointment is necessary, we look through your items while you wait, and get your items out on the sales floor within 24 hours. We provide a detailed list of your consigned items upon request. Any money on your account is available to you at any time; you do not have to wait until the end of the consignment period to collect money that has accrued in your account.

With the economy in turmoil it makes sense that everyone is looking to save some money. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, that's what makes a smart consumer come out ahead in times such as these. The question becomes what to scrimp on and what to splurge on. We can help!

Children's clothing...they grow so fast that spending $30 on an outfit they'll wear only a few times is a needless expense. Purchase items gently used (the baby whose parents originally bought that $30 outfit only wore it a few times, as well!) and make use of hand-me-downs. When your child has outgrown their clothing sell it to a resale store, donate it, or pass it on to a friend.

Foster Kids Cry...A Lot

I know because I used to be one. I was one of the lucky ones; I had grandparents who quickly went through the qualifying steps to allow me to live with them. I lived with them for over a year before I was able to go back home. Even though I knew my grandparents very well, had spent many days and nights with them previously, and knew that they loved me beyond measure, it was still a very difficult and scary time in my life.

Now imagine that scenario minus the loving grandparents and familiar surroundings. Imagine a child taken from everything and everyone they know, regardless of whether those surroundings and people were healthy for them, and thrust into another home with strangers. Imagine a child who has never experienced kindness, tenderness, or safety. Try to imagine what it would be like to be the new foster parents of that scared, traumatized child...

Picture yourself discovering that your 4-year-old foster daughter is hiding food under her bed because she's still not sure you're not going to disappear for days at a time and leave her alone and hungry...

Imagine a 9-month-old foster son who never cries because he has learned that no one helps him when he cries and instead it only gets him shut in a closet because the noise is bothersome...

Visualize yourself finding your 7-year-old foster child scrubbing their skin so hard that it is coming off because they are certain they are filthy and they're desperate to be clean...

Not everyone can be a foster parent. But everyone can help! My pastor, Brad Bramlet, is golfing in the Iron Man Golf Event (100 holes of golf in one day!) next Tuesday to raise money for Foster Connect. Every dollar you pledge in this fundraiser goes to Foster Connect. Although the Iron Man Event is put on by New Bridges Community Church the church keeps ZERO dollars. They do all the work and cover all the expense of putting on the event, sending out pledge request forms after the event, and collecting all pledges. Then they simply send a check for 100% of the money raised to Foster Connect.

Foster Connect is a ministry devoted to helping and supporting foster families. They help in very real ways, providing for physical needs such as diapers, formula, clothing, and groceries. They also connect foster children and parents to each other for the support that comes from shared experience and wisdom. They often help foster parents get connected with the services they need for themselves and their foster children. And they pray and pray and pray for these families who provide a safe haven for lost children who have been found.

I've never used the Born Again Resale & Consignment blog for a fundraising purpose. However, Foster Connect is a hardworking organization and their mission is one that is close to my heart. Clutter Guilt

You walk by that overstuffed closet four times a day and feel that same guilty pang every single time. Or you gaze helplessly at your overflowing closet, shoe shelves, and dresser drawers and despair about where to even start! You know you would feel infinitely better about yourself if you just dug it all out and got rid of the clutter.

You imagine the freedom of filling trashbag after trashbag and just throwing it all out...but then there's that pang of guilt again, because throwing it away is so wasteful, or you remember all the money you spent on the thingamabob that's still in the unopened box...so you cram it all back in and slam the door shut.

One step at a time, my friend. You can be free of your clutter and still sleep at night guilt-free!

1. Get two large cardboard boxes and one laundry basket. Tape a sign on each: "Donate" and "Trash" on the boxes and "Consign" on the laundry basket.

2. Women's, junior's, and children's clothing, shoes, and accessories in good condition that you don't wear anymore and outgrown toys go into the "Consign" basket. Usable items in working condition that you don't use go into the donate box. Items that would be no good to anyone (broken, missing pieces, very dirty, etc) go into the trash box.

3. As soon as you are done with your sort, close up the trash box and take out to your trashcan. Don't give yourself time to rethink; just do it.

4. Close up the donate box and take out to your vehicle. Again, don't give yourself time to think about it; just do it. The next time you go anywhere, swing by your local charity and drop it off. Remember to get a receipt for your tax-deductible donation.

5. Take the consign basket to a well-lighted area and do a quick check, making sure each item is free of stains and that zippers and buttons are present and working. Lay your items as flat as possible back into the laundry basket. Cover the basket with a clean bath towel and put in your car.

I've never actually heard someone say that out loud but I've seen it painted on their faces when I tell them what I do and invite them to check out the store sometime. Honestly, though, I think most people today "get it." I mean, why pay full retail when you can get the same thing for less, right? And why clutter up the earth with more stuff when there's already plenty of stuff to go around?

The "Only Worn Once" Pile

I think pretty much everyone has one of these. You know...the pile on top of your dresser or on the floor of your closet, full of pieces that you "only wore once." They're not quite dirty enough to go in the hamper but you're not quite sure what to do with them.

I was recently reading a Get-Yourself-Organized type of article that addressed this particular problem. As my "Only Worn Once" (OWO) pile is growing exponentially, I figured I'd better heed its advice...and share it with all of you!

The recommendation was this; clean clothes get hung in the closet on the far left side, OWO items get hung on the far right. Everyday when choosing what to wear, only pick items from the center of the closet. This way you are certain to never be seen wearing the same thing too often and your OWO items get worn again before laundering instead of moldering in a pile getting wrinkled. If a few months go by and the same two (or twenty) pieces are still hanging in the center, that means you never wear them for whatever reason and it's time to pass them on.

Globally Conscious; Locally Proactive

According to a recent issue of Entrepreneur Magazine, the newest generation of young adults (19-27 year olds), the "Millenials," have been the most affluent of all the generations that came before; they've succeeded in new job markets and started families later with obvious dividends in the marketplace. But there's a tide of change coming, an upswelling of social- and eco-consciousness that transcends the current economic mood, and it's happening everywhere.

People care. That's the bottom line. Perhaps more than any generation before them, young adults today are concerned with the global environment and the billions of people living on our planet.

The difference---it seems to me---is that today we hear less about campaigns that support volunteers physically far removed from our daily lives and more about people helping people in their own neighborhood and people recycling and reusing in their own homes. People want to DO something; they want to get involved. They want to do their part---the small scale---so that lots of people doing their part will equal large scale change for good.

I want to hear from YOU! What are you doing to bring about change? Do you volunteer in the local veteran's home? Did you start a recycling program at your child's school?

I'll start...
1. I opened a resale and consignment store which helps the environment by saving hundreds of tons of clothing, toys, and accessories from unnecessarily filling up our landfills and by reducing the demand for newly produced goods.

2. We recycle through the city's recycling program at home and at work; aluminum, plastic, paper, cardboard. We also reuse in various ways; junk mail and other envelopes go into a basket by the phone to be used as phone message slips, plastic grocery bags are small trash can liners, newspapers are set aside for use in our fireplace, worn towels are cut into squares and used as cleaning rags, to name a few.

3. We help the local crisis pregnancy center with donations of clothing, toys, and equipment. We, my 11 year old son and myself, participated in their Walk For Life to raise funds. We donate gift certificates and products for their Dessert Auction.

4. Our family participates in an outreach program through our church that brings groceries, cleaning supplies, and toiletries to the residents of an economically disadvantaged apartment complex in the LC Valley.

"Don't go in there! Mom's organizing." Yes, my children say that. They know that to enter in the midst of an organizing frenzy is to be compelled into service...

"Take this stack of games down to the game closet and put them away neatly."

"See these shoes? They don't belong here! Please put them in front of the bedroom doors of their owners."

"Here, hold these corners and help me fold this sheet please. Great job! Only 25 more to go to organize this linen cupboard!"

Do you ever just get in a mood to organize? Usually The Urge comes on me when I've tripped over the same darn thingamabob in the hallway one time too many and I decide I simply must clean out all the hallway closets immediatly, or when I decide my closet has to be cleaned out or I will be unable to shut the door.

While I don't shop to excess, there are always items in my closet that really shouldn't be there anymore; too big (yeah, right!), too small (most of the time), or just not quite right. They're hard to get rid of because I tell myself...

The truth is that they will hang solemnly in the dark corner of my closet until I need the hanger. Then they will lie folded on the top shelf. And every time I look at those lonely pieces I will feel guilty; guilty that I spent money on something I'm not using, and guilty that I'm not doing anything to remedy it...until The Urge comes on me.

Then I am ruthless. I feel so much better after a good healthy purge of "stuff"; fiscally- and environmentally-responsible, organized, with a clean house and a simpler, easier life. Why do I wait so long when it feels so great to get it done?

This month marks Born Again Resale & Consignment's fourth birthday and this is the first time that we've been open on "Festive Friday". It is also the first year that I have ventured out to shop, and I only did it for my husband who insisted he simply could not live without the miter saw and stand that Home Depot was advertising as one of their specials.

I expressed my nervousness to him that maybe I wouldn't be fast enough with that huge cart and that they'd all be gone by the time I made my way to the correct place. His eyes narrowed and his whole body became preternaturally still and he said, slowly enunciating each syllable, "Failure...is...not...an...option."

I'd heard the horror stories of knock-down-drag-out fights in Walmart's toy aisle over the last Malibu Barbie and agressive contractors wielding 50 lb flat carts in the aisles at Home Depot on this, the biggest shopping day of the year. It was with much trepidation that I headed out in the dark this morning. For the most part, though it was really bustling, it wasn't anything like the nightmares that plagued me all night. I was able to get all the items he'd circled and left feeling full of holiday cheer!

I was done at Home Depot by 6:15am and, though we advertised opening at 8am I ended up at the store by 6:30am, so I went ahead and opened up while I got the hot cider and cookies ready. Many people have already stopped in to share their shopping triumphs of the morning and to shop a little more.

Why is Black Friday black?

Whenever I heard that term, Black Friday, growing up I thought it meant something terrible would happen that day. Makes sense, right? Some time during my teens I discovered Black Friday was so dubbed by the retail industry and that day is the single biggest shopping day of the year. Some major retail chains tally up more than 40% of their YEARLY revenue in that ONE DAY!!!

Ummmm...still doesn't explain why it's called Black Friday. Seriously, shouldn't retailers be rejoicing instead of mourning, as the word "black" suggests? And why not pick an upbeat word to celebrate the day instead of one with such a depressing connotation?

So I hereby re-dub Black Friday "Festive Friday"...it's fun, it's frisky, it's...well, festive! Yeah, I'm a rebel that way.

Infant Drowning

I'll never forget visiting our complex's pool when I was 7 months pregnant with Isaiah and Caleb was just 2 years old. My husband, Mike, was in the pool and Caleb was jumping off the side into the safety of daddy's arms. Mike would allow Caleb's head to go under the water for a second and then bring him up, triumphantly smiling and clapping his hands, while we all cheered.

Caleb toddled from the pool's edge to me and back again, each time exclaiming, "Again!" and jumping into daddy's arms...but then Mike was distracted by some neighbor boys who pulled him into a wrestling match. Caleb walked up to the pool's edge, shouted "Again!", and despite my distressed yelp to the contrary jumped into the water in the deepest part of the pool.

It seemed to happen in slow motion and without conscious thought; I screamed Mike's name but he was under the water with three grade-schoolers on top of him (he later said he'd seen Caleb come down through the water but couldn't shake the boys off of him to grab the baby), and ran the seemingly endless length of concrete to the deep end. The concrete was slick and I slipped as I ran and fell onto my pregnant belly and then slid the remaining distance to the pool's edge. My arm shot into the water and grabbed Caleb who by that time had hit the bottom and begun floating up and so was within my reach. I yanked him out and rolled onto my side as I pulled him, smiling and clapping at his success, onto the ground beside me.

From Caleb's perspective, nothing untoward had happened. He had been supremely confident that daddy would soon lift him out of the water and he had dutifully held his breath for those 8-10 seconds it had taken me to get to him and pull him out (seemed like an eternity to me!).

The mood in the pool area instantly changed as shock and recognition of what had just transpired settled on everyone present. Caleb sensed it and immediatly began crying. I was hurt, angry, scared, and crying. Mike was confused and concerned that I had obviously fallen and was on the ground curled around our growing baby and clutching our now wailing toddler. Aside from a few scrapes, aching muscles, and bruises I was fine and our baby was unharmed. Caleb, of course, was absolutely fine and the wailing subsided into sniffles and clinging with the promise of ice cream.

I had nightmares for weeks afterwards...what would have happened "if"? It definitely made us hypervigilant about the community pool and Caleb's potential access to it. My parents had a pool, as did my grandparents, and their pools weren't nearly so hard to get into as our complex's pool with it's fencing and locked gates. I read books about safety and convinced my parents and grandparents to childproof their pools.

I remember the days of breastfeeding. Sure we had those wonderful moments of sweetness; the priceless cuddles as the sun rises, the precious coos of a contented baby...

Of course, I also remember the sleep deprivation and utter (that's "utter" not "udder") resentment at my dear husband who rolled over and went back to sleep as I dragged my tired self into the baby's room for another milk buffet...oh yeah, and there's the whole issue of ownership and who exactly should have access to them and when...gotta love those well-rested husbands!

Yes, "breast is best" and yes, mothers have the market cornered on those. However, thanks to the miracles of modern technology, new and not-so-new dads can now help with those late night and early morning feedings!

This week marks the fourth birthday of Born Again Resale & Consignment. It has been a wild ride and I'm looking forward to many more years of the same.

Since the store is such a big part of my life I talk about it often. Sometimes I have to check myself because not everyone wants to hear about how I sort onesies and create window displays, right? As it turns out, though, I do have at least one friend who actually listens as I babble about cost-of-goods-sold ratios. This week my good friend, Angela, stopped by the store with purple and white flowers in a shiny vase and a beautiful card to commemorate the store's anniversary. I ooohed and aaahed over the lovely bouquet, of course, but there was more than met the eye upon first glance. She prompted me to look closer and what did I see but MY LOGO in FLOWERS!!!

The Teethifier

I did a little research and, unfortunately, it seemed the media's portrayal of it was already taking on a nasty edge so I decided to leave it alone. However, no matter where the media goes with their meanderings I have faith in The People's common sense to sort out the good stuff from the bad stuff;

2 Cute 4 U Tutus

Having two boys myself, I've never gotten to do the frilly girl thing. Don't get me wrong -- I love having boys, and I appreciate it even more now as we enter the teen years. However, whenever the super-cute frilly girly stuff comes in I find myself sighing (ever so slightly) and wishing for hair to braid, nails to paint, and a live-in shopping buddy.

Case in point: these so sweet tutus...

I gave one pink and one purple to my identical twin nieces for their 2nd birthday and they looked adorable prancing around McDonald's making sure everyone knew they were princesses.

Kudos from a 4-year-old

A good friend was shopping in the store the other day. Her two girls happily watched Hercules in the play area while she searched for jeans that would fit her 4-year-old, Gabi (name has been changed to protect the incredibly cute). She has the same problem many moms have; she has to buy a larger size for the length but then they're too big in the waist. Mom picked out three pairs and took Gabi into the fitting room to test drive them.

After much bustling and rustling, I heard a happy squeal from mom! A conversation ensued behind the closed door which sounded very serious but I was helping other customers. When they emerged, smiling and victorious with two winning pairs of jeans, my friend plopped them on the counter and then recounted the serious convo from the fitting room....

Mom: YES! Whoever invented adjustable waistbands was brilliant! It was a stroke of genius!

Gabi: What does 'stroke of genius' mean?

Mom: It means they did something incredibly smart.

Gabi: (long, thoughtful pause, then soulful, serious eyes on mom) Tara did it.

That's it! You heard it here first; I invented adjustable waist jeans, I am brilliant, and it was a stroke of genius, that invention of mine!

Isn't it nice when kids---yours or someone else's---still think you're the smartest person in the world?

The best part of all is that I also got this really groovy long-pole-suction-cup-thingy---yes, that IS the technical term---that I can use to change the words...no more balancing on a two-story ladder to change the sign!

Naked Much?

A friend of mine used to do medical exams for people applying for life insurance; she'd go to their home and do basic stuff like blood pressure, heart rate, and lots of medical history questions. Once she had to go to a nudist colony to do exams on a husband and wife. It was a gated community (thank goodness) with a fully-dressed security guard. Later she told me she was so nervous that she kept missing the parking brake pedal when parking her car. But within five minutes of being invited into their home, she felt completely at ease and was visiting and laughing with them as they drank tea and she asked her medical questions.

That's how it has become with "my girls"; the mannequins. With their anatomically correct structures, I at first felt slightly scandalous and sorry for the poor dears whenever a shirt was sold off of one and I didn't have time to immediatly replace it. Crazy, right? I mean, it's an inanimate object for goodness sake, and they certainly aren't embarassed! But it happens so often that one or another of them is au naturel I've come to suspect that underneath those molded plastic facades lies the heart of a streaker.

As with all very young children, it's best to downplay bad behavior. So if you visit and one of the girls is or becomes disrobed, please simply move on to the next display. I'm sure once the novelty wears off and they stop getting attention for the behavior it will take care of itself.

Once upon a time people shopped resale only to save money. That's certainly a valid reason, especially now with soaring gas prices. However, I'm finding that younger and younger people are becoming more eco-friendly and ethical in their mindset about consumerism.

As I get to know new customers I like to ask them how they heard about Born Again Resale & Consignment and if they've always shopped resale or are a recent convert. More and more, I hear that they shop resale and consignment because it keeps perfectly good clothing out of landfills, lessens the use of resources to manufacture new clothing, stops support of companies utilizing sweat shop and child labor, and keeps American dollars in America rather than going to outsourced overseas manufacturing factories. Of course, saving money and finding amazing brands at great prices are at the top of the list, as well!

But hey, if you can look good while saving the world, why not?!

A Movie Screening Event!

In American today, giving birth is a billion dollar business.

But who is really benefitting?

I am SO excited to announce that Born Again Resale & Consignment is sponsoring a screening of the documentary "The Business of Being Born" (click the title to see the movie preview). Anyone who has been to my store in the last few weeks has probably gotten and flyer, and many have gotten postcards in the mail, and lots of people got an email about it...can you tell I'm excited?

Seriously, this is a must-see. I'm out of commission as a baby-maker but I still felt incredibly empowered after I watched this movie. It truly is for anyone who IS a woman, KNOWS a woman, or LOVES a woman or child. Education and information about healthcare is valuable at every stage of life, and the behind-the-scenes insider information presented in this movie is essential for all women to have and understand.

Most Americans are getting a stimulus check this month. The government says these are meant to stimulate the economy. I'll go out on a limb here and say that they mean the AMERICAN economy...sometimes it's tough to know.

If you use it to buy gas, you're stimulating the Middle Eastern economy. Buying home entertainment systems and electronics will help the Asian economies. Going to the movies stimulates Hollywood, which is sort of American, but I'm not sure it's something I really want to support whole-heartedly. So what's left?

On Being Famous

I walked up to the counter in the convenience store with seven Lewiston Morning Tribune Sunday papers. I plopped them down, smiled and said, "Seven, please!" The gentleman at the counter smiled back and said, "Seven? Must be something good in there, eh?" and then glanced down at the front page and did a double-take. "That's you!" he exclaimed. "Yes, it is," I replied.

Now that he had an "actual famous person" at his counter, he flipped open the paper to scan the headline and blurb under my picture. "That's sooo cool," he murmured as he rung me up. I handed him my credit card to pay and without thinking, as he has probably done thousands of times before, he examined my name on the card and then said, "Do you have some I.D.?" I hesitated a moment and cocked my head at him, smiling. When he realized I wasn't moving for my wallet he looked up at me and then his gaze rested on my front page picture and he grinned back. "Yep! That's you!" and we both laughed as he finished running my card.

Frisbee Injury

I bought a new frisbee for my dog. But not just any frisbee. This is a frisbee made of some kind of thick rubber, the hope being that my dog will NOT chew through it before we've gotten to play with it a few times. It's heavier than a regular frisbee but still flies pretty well. However, it takes a little more umph to give it a good throw. My dog loves to run, retrieve, and return this frisbee. I've thrown it before, but yesterday during our play session I really wanted to give her a good workout so I threw it extra hard. Mistake.

I sat down later to read a book and when I got up thirty minutes later I felt like I couldn't breathe! Apparently I pulled a muscle on my ribcage under my throwing arm. One of this muscle's jobs is to expand my ribcage to let my lungs fill. Funny how you never notice or think about the physical exertion of breathing until something isn't right! I iced it and then took a bath and then settled into bed early thinking surely it would be better in the morning. Nope.

This morning when I arrived at Born Again Resale & Consignment I realized I needed to redress all the mannequins and rearrange all the shoes to highlight the fun summer flip flops we just got in on consignment. I started with the flip flops thinking since they are so light it would hurt less. Wrong. The act of crouching down, crawling around the display getting them "just so", and then getting back up... Well, at least the display turned out nicely, thank goodness...

Then I moved on to the maternity mannequins. Since they are the heaviest (a whole 2 lbs) I figured I should start there and get them over with. They insisted on wrestling with me...kinda like trying to dress a squirrely toddler! I did prevail, however, and they look presentable.

Lastly, I changed out the wall displays which wasn't so much a problem with heavy things as it was reaching above my head. I tried doing it left-handed but I just couldn't get it quite right. I considered bringing out the step ladder so I wouldn't have to reach so high up, but the thought of toting it back and forth across the room brought tears to my eyes. In the end the displays all looked great, though!

Next thing on my to-do list; strengthen my frisbee muscles!

The BPA Dilemma

There's been quite a hubbub of late in the news about the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA. Some say it's harmless, others argue toxicity on a level high enough to create reproductive and developmental harm. Who are we to believe?

This recent article in "The Washington Post" contains an interview of an FDA official and basically says the FDA is reevaluating their position on BPA.

We'd love to hear what YOU think about BPA and it's safe (or not) use in children's products such as baby bottles, sippy cups, and snack containers. Recession?

I've heard a lot of talk coming from Washington lately about how we "are not in a recession". It is reminiscent of the ol' "I'm not running for President" that pretty much every current Presidential candidate spouted a short time ago. It makes you wonder, doesn't it?

Those smart enough to already be resale and consignment shoppers know how you can stretch your dollars and still dress yourself and your kiddos to the nines, but it seems that with the current economic pinch more and more people are "discovering" consignment!

I'm always on the lookout for new, fun displays. Today I scored at a local thrift store; empty frames...big ones! I bought them without knowing exactly what I was going to do with them and headed to Born Again.

Between customers I wandered through the store, trying to imagine how I might use these treasures (if you came in the shop today and wondered why the heck I was standing still and staring at blank walls, I apologize). Finally around 4pm I figured it out! Check it out!

Cleaning out my OWN closet!

As someone who constantly encourages people to "clean out those cluttered closets" you'd think I'd be really good at doing this in my own home. I'm not.

This last weekend I decided enough-is-enough and set about cleaning out my side of the closet (I don't dare touch my hubby's side...he's quite attached to those 15 year old tshirts). I started with the piles of folded clothes on the shelves above the hang rail. I was quite pleased with myself once I had sorted out a "donate" pile and a "consign" pile. So what if it only took a whole hour?! Once I got rolling though, it didn't take long to sort through the hanging clothes, the shoes on the bottom, and all the dresser drawers.

After all that, I was feeling industrious and inspired--a dangerous combination! I got out the vacuum and spared no corner, no windowsill, no heating grate! Then I started on the master bathroom--scrubbing, rubbing, wiping, and dusting...

What I Love...

People often ask me why I decided to open a resale store. I'm never quite sure how to respond because there are too many reasons to list! I love what I do, and I find myself commenting "Oh yes! That's my favorite part of what I do!" about many different things...because they really are all things that I love about owning and running Born Again Resale.

Before moving to Idaho four years ago, I spent about two years researching the possibility of either opening a new resale store in San Diego or buying an existing store. I even started buying some initial inventory. When my husband and I ultimately decided to move to Lewiston, I sold off what I had purchased. We'd been living in Lewiston for less than a month when I made the decision that this was the right time and place to open a resale store. For me, it seemed a natural decision because I had two years of research under my belt, albeit in a different state. For my husband, on the other hand, my confident announcement one July day came as quite a surprise. Though I had worked from home in various ventures and had a few part-time jobs here and there to supplement our household income, for the most part I was a stay-at-home mom until then.

I began scouting out possible locations trying to visualize how each space might work for what I hoped to accomplish. When I laid eyes on 538 Thain Road, I just knew it was the one before I even called the management company to arrange to see the inside. From that day in late August it was less than 90 days until the day I officially opened my doors, and I've been loving it ever since!

Gender Studies @ Born Again Laboratory

A retail store is like a microcosm of our culture; who shops there? why? what is revealed about a person as they wander through aisles? In my own informal studies as a resale store owner, I have come to the conclusion that the "experts" who tell us that gender personality traits are learned, not innate, are dead wrong.

I've observed many children of varying ages over the last three and a half years. Through these extensive scientific studies I have come to the startling conclusion that boys do boy things and girls do girl things. I know this seems very UN-PC, but stick with me here.

In my experience, boys go right for the things that move and/or make really loud noises; balls, trucks, drums, pianos, tool sets (imagine wooden hammer on wooden board). If they happen upon a toy that makes noise but not enough of it, they will find a way to make it louder (i.e. The piano makes quiet music? Maybe if I bang on it with this hammer, the music will get louder!).

Girls typically go right for the shoes, kitchen toys, play telephones, books, and animals. There are always exceptions, of course, but even the seemingly obvious exceptions are often debunked upon closer inspection.

Case in point; Mason and the shopping cart. Mason is two, with all the spunk that goes with that age, and a cool, spiky hairdo. Mason and his mom came to shop and he quickly discovered our new kid-sized shopping cart. The sign on the cart optimistically states "For Official Shopping Helpers Only!" Mason's mom and I cooed over how sweet he was, following along behind mom and "helping" her load up the cart; a decidedly feminine activity. Eventually, I moved off to help other customers. Just minutes later, though, I was drawn back by a loud banging noise. Mason had discovered that this metal shopping cart (it has wheels and moves...that should have tipped me off) could produce a really loud noise by ramming it into the glass door! Joy! He was completely enraptured with his proficiency at noise-making, as was evidenced by the pile of toys he'd "helped" mom load into the cart that was now dumped to the side to allow for easier and faster movement of the cart, thus producing a more satisfying BANG! Though we tried several different tactics to curb this activity, eventually Mason's mom and I opted to hide the cart behind the counter until they were gone.

Occassionally, we'll get a boy that has inherited the "shoe gene" and he will delightedly survey the selection and carefully choose a pair to his liking. However, boyness will eventually take over when he delivers the shoes successfully to mom and moves on to more interesting pursuits like rolling balls down the entrance ramp or crashing trucks into Barbies. Girls will sometimes be fascinated with the trucks, but invariably they will add a doll or stuffed animal and talk animatedly with them as they give them a ride to the imaginary shopping mall or restaurant.

What does this mean for the state of science today and the future of mankind? Boys are boys and girls are girls. I don't know about you, but that makes me smile!

Window Dressing Drama

Remember that line from "The First Wives Club" where the fake chic interior designer is talking to the wanna-be socialite about how "...your windows are the eyes to the soul of your home..."? As cheesy as that line is, it has stuck with me. Consequently, I'm always conscious of how my store windows look from the inside and the outside. Whenever I start feeling "stale" I just change the windows. I swear, it's better than Prozac!

We had a few days of warmer weather last month (we really did!) and infused with the promise of spring, I changed the windows and put up a single bright outfit for each children's window and on the boutique side decided on boldly colored tank tops and jeans. Fun, right?

Then the snow came.

Suddenly the windows didn't feel "right" anymore. I fussed over them for a few days, hoping against hope (and the weatherman) that this was temporary and the snow and dreary weather would soon melt away. Alas, the ground still crunches under my shoes as I make my way from the car to the front door. Finally, I decided I'd better update the windows.

I wandered the aisles trying various combinations, but nothing seemed quite "it." Finally, though, I hit upon the solution. Jackets! I was giddy with glee as I simply added stylish lightweight jackets to each mannequin. Yes, this was it! I donned my own jacket to go outside and look at the windows from the sidewalk to assure myself of their curb appeal. In and out I went as I adjusted, looked, readjusted, looked again, until I got it just right.

Of course, now that my mannequins are dressed to impress, the sun is sure to make a grand appearance and melt all this icy muck away. So when that happens, remember my Window Dressing Drama and thank goodness for irony!
